Grow Old

When I was younger I carved my name into a worn out tree trunk where I'm sure it still remains
Scars don't go away while the memories fade, we keep keepsakes in our pockets to remember all our games
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna go, no
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna know
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna go, no
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna grow, old
Childlike nature yields to childish games, we throw rocks at all the little girls and we call each other names
Well I wonder where my wonder went when I told my mom and dad I knew much more than they did
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna go, no
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna know
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna go, no
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna grow, old
It's funny how the world looked so much bigger back then, but if only we had listened we'd've known how much bigger it would get
Now I'm worried about the rent check while I'm punching in the clock, while I'm thinking about the summer we spent catching lizards in the rocks
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna go, no
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna know
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna go, no
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna grow, old
Despite my wish to look back through my childs' eyes I suppose that I'm more boy than man than I think I realize
Cuz I still play all the same games though some of the rules have changed, I'm amazed at how confused I can get telling pleasure from the pain
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna go, no
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna know
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna go, no
I don't wanna, I don't wanna leave, I don't wanna grow,
Ring-a-round the rosie, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down

Fear

"Go out and prosper," he said to his son, "Live in the world and meet someone."
"Be careful what you ask for," he said to his dad, "It might just come true and I'll never come back."
It's the fear inside us all
That makes us who we are
Rain so hard I can't calm down
Washing all the roads into the Puget Sound
Is man made of dust or is he made of light?
The way we stand together 'neath the darkest of night
It's the fear inside us all
That makes us who we are
Man came back to greet his dad
To see if being like him was really that bad
He'd grown old and weary but had learned to smile
Talking to himself all the while
"When the time comes to give up the ghost
Don't you know I'll be singing loud,
Don't you know I'll be singing loud!"
Man moved away and started a life
With faith in the fact that it's worth the price
A son of his own was soon coming of age
The man would soon be forced through the rites of a sage
When the time comes to give up the ghost
Don't you know I'll be singing loud
Don't you know I'll be singing loud!
Boys will be boys at least that's what they say
Shaping the mold from the potters' clay
Boy turned to man with a sigh and a shrug
Turning away he said:
"We're not here to sing an anthem and we're not here to sing love songs
We're not here to sing an anthem and we're not here to sing love songs."
Because it's the fear inside us all, that makes us who we are
"Go out and prosper," he said to his son, "Live in the world and meet someone."
"Be careful what you ask for," he said to his dad, "It might just come true and I'll never come back."

Right Here
03:01
|

I'm flipping up my collar 'cause the wind is getting chilly
And I guess I should be thankful that I'm not in New York City
I'm spending every day on love and respect
'Cause karma can be a bitch when she's breathing down your neck
There's a man on the corner with a sign that says smile
I toss him some change and stand there for a while
I pull out a smoke, ask for a light, he turns to me with eyes so bright
He says "Each day I know a little bit less than what I thought I knew the day before."
Each day I feel more alive and each day I survive
For every day I wanted to die, I just cast aside
Each day I feel more alive and each day I survive
For every day I wanted to die, I just cast aside
'Cause I don't know where I'd rather be but right here
See I've spent way too long parking my ship on top of rocks
Full speed ahead set to ram the docks
Now I'm knee deep in a pile of my own mess
I don't know where to go for my soul to get some good rest
Now I just stand watching people I don't know
Wondering whether they come or they go
I suppose it all depends in which stream they flow
Whether they know who they are or just who they know
And every day I pose the question as often as I can
"Am I a tough guy, or a strong man?"
Each day I feel more alive and each day I survive
For every day I wanted to die, I just cast aside
Each day I feel more alive and each day I survive
For every day I wanted to die, I just cast aside
'Cause I don't know where I'd rather be but right here
Flashback to the words that my mama made me swallow
"I hope your life's a struggle till you less your fears go"
From the hell that I've seen to the heaven that'll follow
I'm gonna journey through the fire till my bones are hollow
And I know in my soul that I got a long way to go
'Till my feet take root and my wings start to grow
In the meantime I'm gonna reap what I sow
With a smile on my face 'cause it's all I know
Each day I feel more alive and each day I survive
For every day I wanted to die, I just cast aside
Each day I feel more alive and each day I survive
For every day I wanted to die, I just cast aside
'Cause I don't know where I'd rather be but right here
